Department of Public Instruction Target of Thieves

RALEIGH — June 26, 1996 - 6:13 p.m. EDT

Thefts have occurred mainly on weekends, on all seven floors of the building, but not in other agencies which share the building. Capitol police have a team working on the case. Investigators are considering whether current or former employees angry with the recent reorganization might be getting revenge.

One employee told WRAL-TV5'sYvonne Simonsthat some workers are scared they might be considered suspects, and are avoiding being alone in their work areas.

Johnson says the bottom line is no one knows who's doing it.

At any rate, security measures are tighter, there is a security guard on duty on weekends, and officials are hoping that will prevent someone from taking employees' work home with them.

Raleigh police are handling the investigation. Anyone with information about these crimes are asked to call 919-733-4646
