Rodney Murray was convicted last week of violating a domestic violence protection order, which was part of a plea deal he reached with prosecutors, to to stay away from his ex-girlfriend, Gina Ambrosecchia. He was later arrested after Ambrosecchia's son told police he saw Murray driving near his mother's home.
The judge sentenced Murray to two years supervised probation and 30 days of active jail time, giving him credit for the 21 days he has already served.
When Ambrosecchia tried to break off her 10-year relationship with Murray, the fire chief admitted it was hard to accept because he still had feelings for her. Ambrosecchia, however, told a judge last week that she is scared for her life.
"I'm afraid he might kill me," she said.
Murray is on medical leave while he recovers from a heart attack. He will retire March 1 when the medical leave expires.
Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton said there are no plans to take the chief off the payroll.
"We have a set of personnel policies and we're trying to be careful to follow them exactly," he said.
Murray still has nine days in jail. Afterward, he will be sent to Fellowship Hall, a substance abuse treatment center in the Triad.
