According to the state Highway Patrol, the bus driver, Tahysha Savage, was trying to pass a stopped or turning vehicle by moving to the right of it, running off the road and causing the bus to flip onto its side.
Three of the 15 students on the bus were taken to Western Wake Medical Center for treatment. The most serious injury was a broken arm. By noon, all of the children had been treated and released. A fourth student who had a cut knee went home with a parent.
"They were very calm," said state Highway Patrol Sgt. Ron Whitehurst. Worried parents rushed to the accident scene, but most were relieved that the injuries were not serious
The Highway Patrol told WRAL-TV5's Mark Roberts that the driver would be charged with improper passing. Officials say the driver had worked for the Wake County schools for about three years.
The children who were not injured were taken to Washington Elementary school on another bus.
The accident was the first in Wake County this school year, which opened Tuesday
