Broadcasters toured the multi-million dollar remote unit today at the WRAL-TV Studios.
The 53-foot long production truck is a joint venture of Capitol Broadcasting Company'sWRAL-HD,HD Visionin Texas and DTV Resources.
Viewers will see the benefit.
"Local stations don't have the capability to do, lets say a parade or local sports or something they normally do in low definition. They just can't afford to do it in high definition," says Randall Dark of HD Vision.
HDV-5 is available for rent so local stations do not have to invest in their own HDTV remote unit.
HDV-5 broadcast last weekend'sFood Lion MVP Classicbasketball tournament in Charlotte. High Definition TV set owners are hungry for programs.
"Maybe they're getting Monday Night Football andCBS programming, prime time. But now they can get some local events in high definition.-- "Everything from music, to sports, to [things like] the local symphony performing," says Dark.
Equipped with the latest in digital cameras and production gear, this is the newest of only five high definition mobile units in the country. This truck does double duty.
"It is digital, it's wide screen, high resolution. We have the capability to broadcast in high definition, and at the same time down convert for regular programming," says Dark.
As member stations of the HDTV consortium share their programs with other member stations, viewers around the country will have more viewing options.
