A Raleigh man called 9-1-1 before dawn Friday morning to report his girlfriend's death. By Friday afternoon, he was behind bars.
Police arrived to find the body of 38-year-old Angela Jackson in her home less than a block away from Oakwood Cemetery in downtown Raleigh.
Jackson's live-in boyfriend, James Allen, 40, has been charged with first-degree murder. He was being held Friday night in the Wake County jail. Police say he allegedly beat her to death with some sort of club. Jackson died from head injuries.
Neighbors say the couple had lived in the rented house for about a year with two children.
One of the children, 11-year-old Natasha Cresia Hull, said she was awakened by Allen's screaming during the night.
Jim Thorpe, who lives next-door to the crime scene, said he didn't know the woman well, but he never saw or heard any signs of trouble in the house. He said the neighborhood was very surprised to wake up to crime scene tape Friday morning.
Police said early Friday that they didn't believe Jackson's death was connected to those of four other black women in Raleigh this summer.
