A teenager is dead and a little girl is hospitalized after separate accidents involving guns in the home.
A Wake Forest teen is in jail charged with killing his best friend. Police say a game led to this shooting.
Seventeen-year-old David Craycraft is charged with involuntary manslaughter. Police say he shot and killed his good friend Morgan Campbell, 18, Tuesday night while the two were playing with guns.
The panic-stricken young man called a 9-1-1 operator immediately after the shooting, saying he accidentally shot his friend and that he didn't know the gun was loaded.
Deputies say Craycraft pointed a gun at Campbell and fired, killing him.
Herbert Holding of the Wake County Sheriff's Department says tragedies like this one don't have to happen.
Holding recently bought a rifle and said it came with a pamphlet that spelled out very clearly rules for safe firearms handling.
It's too late for Craycraft and Campbell, but Holding says the two most important rules to remember are always handle a gun as if it's loaded and never point it any anything or anyone you're not going to shoot.
Another shooting took place in a Fayetteville home where an 11-year-old girl was visiting a home on Breezewood Avenue when a shotgun blast struck her on the chin.
Police say the girl and a boy found the gun inside the house and began playing with it.
The girl is hospitalized and listed in stable condition.
Police officers say it is important to discuss guns with your family even if you do not have one in your home. There are more than 200-million guns in homes across the country so officers say you should discuss them with children as soon as they start acting out "gun play."
It is also a good idea, they say, to ask if there are guns at the homes where your children play, and to make sure the safety rules are followed
