The campaign to re-elect Senator Jesse Helms has limited the number of bumper stickers and signs it will distribute, citing the possibility of vandalism due to the "hatred liberals have for Senator Helms" as the reason.
The Helms campaign sent a memo to County leaders saying it will distribute such campaign materials only to supporters who have been warned of the possible problems.
Jennifer Knox, Helms' campaign manager, wrote that Helms supporters have had stickers stripped from their cars and signs destroyed in their yards. She added that one Raleigh couple, who had Helms stickers on their cars, found their tires slashed one morning with "vulgar anti-Helms epithets" scratched into the cars' paint.
The memo said the campaign wants to take precautions to prevent such occurrences
