Last Friday, WRAL-TV5's Bret Baier reported on a McDonald's restaurant that received a grade of "A" from the Raleigh health department, despite the presence of maggots in an ice cream machine. After that story aired, WRAL phone lines were swamped with calls.
Among the callers were two former McDonald's managers, one of whom just recently resigned from the Poole Road restaurant in question. She asked not to be identified, but told Baier that she left because of health conditions. When she saw his report she felt she should speak out. Maggots, she says, were only part of the problem.
The maggots that were found in the Poole Road restaurantwerein an out-of-service machine, but were located next to a food preparation area.
In three of the past four inspections, health inspectors marked deductions for flies, roaches or other vermin. Each time, the restaurant receive a grade of "A".
The owner of this particular McDonald's franchise, Ray Pope, declined to comment on camera but did talk to Baier by telephone.
He says he is confident the problem has been resolved, and says he did not see it as a health hazard. When asked to comment on the allegations from former workers Pope responded that he's received an "A" on every report, and that if a problem arises he takes care of it
