CARY — June 22, 1996, 8:15 a.m. EDT

Cary police are still investigating a three-car accident that tied up traffic on US 1 for two hours Friday night. Police say alcohol does not seem to have been a factor.

About 9:30 p.m. a southbound car crossed the median and hit a blue car head on, which then split in half and caught fire.

A third car hit the front half of the blue car.

The driver of the southbound car was identified as Hashim Stanly, 25, of Raleigh. The car's owner was a passenger in the vehicle; he was identified as Joshua Newman, 19, of Garner.

Because they have been unable to speak with the people in the second car, Cary police have only tentative identification established. But the people were carrying Cary addresses. The third car was driven by Savrabh Patel, 29, of Raleigh.

By Saturday afternoon, only Hashim Stanly remained in Wake Medical Center.

Cary police ask anyone with information on what led up to the accident to call them at 919-460-4903
