Web Site Makes Holiday Shopping Easy

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — A new Web site from the Triangle will help make your shopping easier this holiday season, and state government leaders are pushing hard to make Internet access more available in rural areas.

NetGift Registry Networkputs your gift wishes and those of your friends and family online. The Durham company says the network makes gift giving much easier.

You sign up for the free service and then add names and e-mail addresses to develop a gift circle.

Selecting your hobbies and interests gives gift givers an idea of what you like. You can also enter important dates such as your birthday and Christmas to remind your circle to shop for you.

If you want something specific such as a bicycle, you can select the one you want. NetGift Registry takes shoppers to Internet sites for that product.

Several hundred online merchants are network members offering millions of gift selections, and you can buy gifts for any occasion.

Flooding in eastern North Carolinadestroyed many homes and businesses, government leaders say rebuilding is an opportunity to move that part of the state into the knowledge economy.

"Only about 10 percent of eastern North Carolina is connected to the Internet today. For those small businesses to compete in the knowledge economy that we're involved in, they really need to be connected," said Rick Webb, chief information officer.

Information technology leaders from other states are also participating in the technology conference.
