Durham Mourns Special Needs Student

A Durham community is mourning the loss of a special needs student at Southern High School.

Kristy Burgette, 21, was seriously injured in a 1990 automobile accident that left her wheelchair-bound and otherwise impaired.

A school spokesperson said she suddenly stopped breathing Thursday morning and collapsed. An ambulance was called and she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Burgette was just weeks away from graduating. She was part of a "self-contained" class with a teacher and teaching assistant
