Governor Jim Hunt managed to recruit a high-level believer in the state's Smart Start program when Vice President Al Gore showed up at Chapel Hill's Community School For People Under Six.
Gore, interested in finding out more about the program which has gained national attention, took over reading time at the school Monday morning.
Afterward, he addressed parents, teachers and community leaders saying Smart Start was helping to create healthy children who are ready to learn by the time they begin formal education.

After offering high praise for the program, Gore went on to speak at the NC State "Emerging Issues Forum"
