The football coach at Durham's Hillside High School announced Tuesday that he will resign following his arrest on a felony drug charge.

James Lillie, 46 has been on paid suspension since Jan. 3. He was arrested in December for possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver it, ossession of drug paraphernalia, transporting liquor and running a red light.

A Durham police officer found marijuana, cocaine and a bottle of liquor in a rental car Lillie was driving. Lillie says the items weren't his, and says he will be found not guilty in court.

Lillie says he is stepping down because he won't be able to clear his name, regardless of the outcome of his court case.

Lillie had taught and coached in Durham's public schools for 22 years
