Gifted Teen Dies in Durham Crash

Posted Updated

DURHAM — March 19, 1996, 5:10 ESTEighteen-year-old Jasmine Lockamy was driving her younger brother to school Monday morning because his bus was late. It cost her her life.

Speed was not a factor in the crash, which occurred when her car slid off Bahama Road near Durham County's northern border. Rowan, her brother, is in stable condition with broken ribs and collarbone, and possibly a ruptured spleen.

Jasmine Lockamy was preparing to attend Appalachian State University in Boone this fall, something she had achieved with her 1200-point SAT scores. She was also an exceedingly talented photographer.

Her Northern Durham High School classmates are devastated by her death, much as Johnston County high school students were after the March 6 automobile accidents that killed three classmates.

The Durham 18-year-old was the second of six children, all the others boys. A fund has been set up through Northern Durham High School to help her family cover funeral expenses. Call 919-560-3956 during school hours for more information
