Bank Incident Ends in Kinston

KINSTON — March 4, 1996 - 3:55 p.m. EST

There are many questions and a confusing scenario from an incident Monday morning at a Wachovia Bank office in Kinston.

About an hour prior to the bank's normal 9 a.m. opening, a woman with a gun entered the bank and said she wanted an early withdrawal.

What happened next is unclear. Police told a local paper that one employee wound up locked into an old vault -- where she talked by phone to a colleague. He contacted police and she was eventually freed.

Meanwhile, the police did not know if the suspect was still in the bank. After waiting two and a half hours, they determined the bank was empty.

Police said all bank employees have been accounted for.

There's no word on the whereabouts of the armed woman
