IOC Officials: Hunter Failed Four Drug Tests Over Summer

Posted Updated

DURHAM — As sprinter Marion Jones continues her quest for five gold medals, her husband, C.J. Hunter, has been rocked by scandal. Officials have confirmed that Hunter failed four separate tests for steroid use this summer.

Hunter, the world shotput champion, pulled out of the Olympics a month ago due to a knee injury. The recent news of his positive test for using Nandrolone, a banned performance enhancer, stunned former Duke and assistant Olympic track coach Al Buehler.

"I can't believe a world-class record holder would do that," Buehler says.

Buehler has firsthand experience with cases like Hunter's. He has been involved with international track and field for years and has actually served on drug testing panels. He says he is surprised that he would be caught in this type of scandal.

"He is too experienced, knows all of the ropes and knows all of his stuff. How can he do this," asks Buehler.

Nandrolone is a steroid that is naturally found in the body in small amounts. In special supplements, nandrolone makes your body and muscles stronger and allows athletes to train better and longer.

There is a debate raging about other sources of nandrolone. Some doctors say eating steroid-fed meat can raise the levels of the drug in your body.

In a written statement, Hunter says he plans to defend himself against the charges vigorously.
