DUPLIN COUNTY — Sarah Vinson, an all-conference volleyball player from North Duplin High School, is quite a student-athlete.

Vinson admits that you can usually find her at the middle of anything.

"I just love being involved in everything," she says. "I want to experience everything that is possible. I'm very energetic and always on the go."

Academically, Vinson is No. 1 in the senior class. She is also president of the student body government. She says she is a natural leader.

"Leadership takes a good, moral standing, and I think it takes a lot of passion and cooperation," she says. "I think it takes a lot of caring and compassion, and it has to come from the heart."

"I always tell people that I'm not the naturally smart type of person who can go into a test and be like, 'I didn't study and I still made a 100.' I work for every grade I get," she says.

Shirlee Gaskins, Vinson's teacher, says Vinson does not have any limits in what she can achieve.

"She is a determined person, and she is determined that she is going to be the best she can be," she says.

Sarah Vinson is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
