RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County school board could move forward with plans Tuesday to revoke the magnet status at several schools.

Daniels Middle, East Garner Middle, East Millbrook Middle, Zebulon Middle, Garner High and Broughton High schools are all on the agenda. Board members said the schools no longer need special, more expensive programs to attract students to increase diversity.

Some Wake County parents are hoping their schools will maintain their magnet status.

"There's something that we're offering that if we don't offer it, it won't be available to kids in our community," said parent Jay Wisse.

Some parents voiced their displeasure at a rally Monday outside Olds Elementary School. A school board commission already voted to cut the magnet program at four schools -- Olds Elementary, Root Elementary, Lincoln Heights Elementary and Wake Forest Elementary.

"We're trying to do this as objectively as we possibly can," said school board chair Patti Head.

Several parents are expected to speak at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a public comment session at the system's Administration Building, located at 3600 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.
