About 100 campers are spending this week with some of the nation's greatest hockey instructors, coaches and players.
The first goal: to nail down the basics of ice skating.
"We go over a lot of edge work -- left leg, right leg, some crossover stuff," instructor Jimmy Powers says. "Tomorrow, we'll do backwards and start throwing the pucks at them for stick handling, passing and shooting."
Over the next five days, the camp will include workout sessions and classroom instruction on strength, training and nutrition.
But for some kids, the best part is on the ice, where they will be able to get tips from a pro.
"I think it's a great opportunity for these kids to come out," Hurricanes player Bates Battaglia says. "I know when I was their age and went to hockey camp, if I had a chance to see an NHL player, it made my day."
For some campers, the stargazing is as exciting as the hockey.
"It's really fun. You get to meet Bates Battaglia and some Hurricanes players. And it's fun to play ice hockey, too," says 10-year-old camper Kyle Hathcock.
The camp continues all week and finishes up with final games Saturday morning.
