DURHAM — Some area kids got lessons on the gridiron Saturday from the pros at the Dewayne Washington Football Clinic in Durham.

Nearly 200 kids showed up for the annual event. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back and Cary resident Dewayne Washington hosted the clinic at Hillside High.

Washington brought along a few of his NFL friends: Steelers teammates Jerome Bettis and Kordell Stewart; St. Louis Ram and former NCSU standout Torry Holt and Jimmy Hitchcock of the Carolina Panthers.

Washington says the event is all about the kids.

"This is something that we've been doing for a while. This is our fifth year coming to the Durham community," Washington says. "Giving back. That's really what my foundation is really about."

Washington is a graduate of N.C. State and Northern High School in Durham.

Any high school student in Durham or Wake County, planning on attending an in-state college, was eligible to receive a scholarship through the event. -->
