North Edgecombe's Whitehead Leads the Warriors On and Off the Field

Posted Updated

TARBORO — North Edgecombe High Schoolhas a tremendous tradition of winning football games, and senior quarterback Donald Whitehead has played a major role in getting the Warriors into the third round of the state 1-A playoffs.

He can beat you running or throwing the football. "He's got great athleticism, he's got great speed and quickness and just a will to be successful and determination to find a way to win," said coach Raymond Cobb.

Whitehead thinks speed and quickness go a long way. "I can run, and I have the ability to make people miss and stuff like that, so I think that makes me a great football player," he said.

Whitehead takes academics at least as seriously. "To me, school is more important than sports," Whitehead said.

Academically, Whitehead has a 3.9 GPA. His teachers think highly of him. "He's always very trustworthy, he's honest, and he's willing to help other people," said teacher Kim Wittig. "He is the type of student that every teacher would be proud of, as well as every parent."

"He's just a model of everything that you'd want in your quarterback, as a person, as a player, as a student. He's a student of the game just like he's a student in the classroom," Cobb said.

Donald Whitehead is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
