Northern Vance Senior Paints a Pretty Picture on the Soccer Field

Posted Updated

HENDERSON — It has been a record-setting soccer season for Northern Vance senior Matt Frazier. Frazier has a school-best 33 goals this season for the playoff-bound Vikings.

This was a season characterized by hard work. "Ever since August 3 when practiced started I've been working real hard, and the team, we've all been working real hard," Frazier says.

"This summer I worked real hard during the off-season and lifted weights a little and tried to get better," he says.

"Matt is very creative," says Northern Vance coach Dave Hicks. "He is constantly thinking. He plays striker, he plays at the top, and you have to be very creative to score goals."

But he's also a great assist man. "They sort of count on him to shoot the ball and to score when it's possible, but they know that if somebody else is open, they know he'll give the pass to them, let them have the opportunity to shoot," says assistant coach Tommy Farmer. "I think he's gained their respect."

Matt is an honor student with many interests. He loves drama. His favorite class is art. He is respected for his involvement in school and community life.

Matt Frazier is someone his friends and teammates know will always be there.

Matt Frazier is the winner of this week's Extra Effort award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
