All-Conference Athlete Strives to be the Best

If there is a sport to be played, Kivett will play it, and play it well.

"I'm not the type of person that's a star in one sport. I just like to play every sport that we have and I just like to be a competitor in everything I do," she says.

"She's just a tremendous kid. She wants to be number one in everything that she does, whether it is basketball, softball, in English class, wherever. She wants to be number one," says athletic director Bill Slaughter.

Kivett calls herself a "competitive person' and strives to do her best on the court and in the classroom.

Academically, Kivett is number one in her class and is a finalist for the University of North Carolina's prestigious Morehead scholarship.

But is more than athletics and academics that has impressed her teachers and coaches.

"Even with all of her athletic and academic ability, she is so unassuming and so caring about other people. She would never say or do anything that would hurt any of her classmates," says teacher Betty Wainwright.

Coach Ron Newman says Kivett treats everyone with respect.

"She treats everyone as a friend and everyone really respects her," he says. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort Award airs each Wednesday during WRAL's 6:00 News.
