Brown is a team captain and has been called the heart and soul of the Pirate's defense.
"I try to keep everybody focused. If someone has a bad play I try to get them up. I try to lead by example -- always get down on defense, always bounce back up if I make a bad play," says Brown.
"She's the kind of player that you want everyone to look at as the role model," says Riverside coach Susan Ray.
"I've met a lot of my best friends through volleyball at Riverside. I moved here my freshman year, didn't know anybody. I tried out for volleyball and I had a bunch of friends right there. Volleyball has really made high school great for me," says Brown.
Brown, who also plays basketball and softball, is an A student who has impressed her teachers with her unselfishness.
"She was always ready to work, she was always ready to enter into any discussion. She was always willing to help someone," says teacher Paula Pritchard.
"There's not a person at school who doesn't think Meghan is wonderful and just a great player, a great person. You know, if you could have a team of hard-working people like that, of hard-working athletes, anybody could be a championship team," says Ray.
"She is a girl that you would like to be your child's best friend," says Pritchard. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort Award airs each Wednesday during WRAL's 6:00 News.
