ACC Basketball Stars Take Off in NBA Draft

The Golden State Warriors selected former Tar Heel and All-American Vince Carter as the 5th pick in the first round.

Before the 6th pick took place, the NBA commissioner announced that the Raptors traded the rights to Jamison and cash considerations to the Warriors for the rights to Carter.

Duke's Roshown McLeod was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks as the first round 20th pick. McLeod was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team for the 1997-98 season.

Shammond Williams, another former Tar Heel, was taken in the second round by the Chicago Bulls as the 34th overall pick.

Carter discussed how long he has dreamed of playing professional basketball.

"Ever since I really understood what the NBA was as a child," Carter said. "I said that I really would like to be there looking at guys like Dr. J, and on up to Jordan and Pippen and those guys. I just want to be a part of it."

Jamison said that he will do his best to help make his team successful.

"You know that you're not going to turn a team around just like that," Jamison said. "If the team only won 20 games, you're not going to make them win 40 or 50 games just like that. You just have to go in there with a positive mentality. Just go in there and say no matter what happens I'm going to try to do my best, and do whatever is possible for my team to be successful."

One other ACC star was drafted by the Orlando Magic who picked forward Matt Harpring from Georgia Tech as the fifteenth choice in the first round.
