Jimmy Green Settles for 60

RALEIGH — In round one of the Nike Carolina Classic, the golfers blitzed the Raleigh Country Club course. Seventy-four of the 144 golfers were under par, including an 11 under par 60.

It's the golf equivalent of hitting .400 in baseball. A sub-60 round in golf has only been accomplished twice in a professional event. Thursday at the first round of the Nike Carolina Classic, Jimmy Green almost matched the magical number. Green settles for an 11 under par 60, but 59 was certainly on his mind.

"There's only a few people in the history of the game who have shot below 60," Green says. "I was trying to do it. Don't get me wrong. But I was also trying not to have a train wreck out there either."

Incredibly enough, Green's round was almost matched by Matt Gogel. The Kansas native fires a nine under par 62, a surprising score for a guy who's earned less than $1,000 in seven tournaments.

"I missed the cut in Florence," Gogel recalls. "I grabbed an old set of irons and had a victory in them. So I brought them out and was able to do some good."

Casey Martin cards a three under par 68, but he's eight shots behind Jimmy Green.
