All this created quite a hill to climb for the man who finished just 14 points away from the championship last season. But he won the pole at Las Vegas, then took the race at Darlington. Mid-season finds Jarrett feeling much better about the season.
"We're doing okay," Jarrett says. "We're not that far back. We still have time to make a run."
Once 35th in points, Jarrett's Taurus has now moved to sixth with 22 races to go. It can still happen-- number 88 in '98.
"If we weren't running well, I'd be concerned," admits Jarrett. "But we've run well everywhere we've been. So I'm encouraged by all of that."
Like other top drivers, Jarrett is heavily in demand-- not only for time with the media but promotions and appearances. No complaints here:
"Certainly there's a lot more demands on drivers today," explains Jarrett. "It goes along with the sports and its growth. I don't see a downside to any of that."
Jarrett would love to experience the demands of being Winston Cup champion.
