Lancaster Cashes In at Forest Oaks

Posted Updated

GREENSBORO — Neal Lancaster has never had success in his six previous outings at Forest Oaks. Five missed cuts and a 61st place finish hilted the Smithfield native's track record at the Greater Greensboro event. This time, Lancaster came to play with a different approach.

"I told myself, this is my part of the country," Lancaster explains. "These guys can't play golf any better than I can, especially on courses that I play on."

Mission accomplished. Lancaster thrilled not only himself, but a large, local following with his fourth place finish. His $105,000 payday more than doubles his 1998 earnings.

"I've been on the verge all year," says Lancaster. "I've have like four 30th place finishes, throwing away strokes here and there. It's just like the U.S. Open. I guess I play better on difficult golf courses. The harder they are, the better I play.

Lancaster nearly lost his PGA playing card last season. After his effort in Greensboro, that won't be a problem this year.
