FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Pembroke man is in the Cumberland County Jail charged with child-sex crimes.

Investigators said Cherokee Ray Jackson, 30, of Remer Drive, began a sexual relationship with an 8-year-old girl in 1999. Authorities said the girl was left in Jackson's care while the mother was at work.

Jackson surrendered to authorities Wednesday. He is charged with 21 felony counts involving sexual activity, the sheriff's department said in an announcement.

Jackson was being held on $525,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
