Cary's fifth annual Kwanzaa celebration started around 11 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m.
Organizers say the number of participants is growing every year.
"The fifth annual Kwanzaa celebration will be embraced with our hearts and our minds as a day when we will be challenged to remember our past, acknowledge our present, and envision our future. It will also be a time to remember and to celebrate the heritage and cultures of the African-American people," said event organizer Lester Thomas.
Kwanzaa was started in 1966 by Doctor Maulana Karenga, who is expected to be in Cary for the celebration.
The celebration ends January 1.
