Special Olympics Athletes Arrive at RDU

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Special Olympics delegates from 100 countries will arrive atRDU International Airportover the next two days.

Athletes and coaches from Nepal arrived in the Triangle Saturday. The real crunch begins Sunday. Volunteers are staffing the Welcome Center at a hangar near RDU. It is part of an effort to minimize the impact on airport traffic.

"We get them away from the terminals, and we handle their baggage while it's still on the tarmac. We do other things that make it quicker for our delegates to get through the airport property," says Joe Freddoso, Special Olympics CEO.

Friday will be the busiest day at the airport, when 3,000 members of Team USA arrive.

The athletes will travel on private corporate planes, so the additional traffic should not have much impact on commercial flights.
