Posted Updated

WINSTON-SALEM — Thousands of people have descended upon Winston-Salem for the excitement of the annual CIAA Tournament.

The event goes beyond the games being played on the basketball court by the teams from the 12 historically black institutions making up the conference.

The arena is filled with school bands pumping up the crowd and fans of all ages cheering on their teams.

Last year, the tournament attracted an estimated 42,000 people, and many of them plan to head to Raleigh next year.

With 86 years of athletic competition, the CIAA is the nation's oldest African-American athletic conference.

This year's games will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Women's Basketball Tournament.

The tournament lasts through this Saturday. Anyone that needs ticket information can call1-888-451-CIAA.
