I-40 Congestion Kicks off Memorial Day Weekend
Congestion along eastbound Interstate 40 in Wake and Durham counties kicked off the Memorial Day Weekend and the summer-travel season.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Congestion along eastbound Interstate 40 in Wake and Durham counties kicked off the Memorial Day Weekend and the summer-travel season.
On North Carolina roadways, Highway Patrol troopers will increase patrols this weekend to deter speeding. Law enforcement agencies are also taking part in seat belt enforcement with Click-It or Ticket checkpoints throughout the state.
The travel season comes as gasoline has reached near-record highs.
In the Triangle, a gallon of regular unleaded cost $3.15 per gallon, up 36 cents from last year at this time. In Fayetteville, prices were a little lower at $3.12 per gallon.
AAA said it thinks people will still take their summer vacations but will try to spend less on hotels and restaurants.
More than 180,000 people were also expected to travel through Raleigh-Durham International Airport this weekend. Airport officials expected Friday to be the busiest day with more than 30,000 people scheduled to fly in and out of RDU.
And on the waters, officials are also urging boaters to wear a life jacket and refrain from drinking alcohol. More than 70,000 people boat each year in the United Sates. In 2005, more than 3,400 people ere injured and 697 died in boating-related incidents. Alcohol was a factor in about a quarter of all deaths.
