DURHAM, N.C. — Investigators believe speed and alcohol were a factor in a Durham accident that ended with one person dead and two others injured.

Shortly before midnight, authorities said Benito Garibo, 24, was driving a pickup truck on westbound Interstate 40 near Miami Boulevard when he tried to change lanes and hit a sport utility vehicle.

Garibo was thrown from the vehicle and died as a result of head injuries. A passenger in the truck, Jamie Vega-Lezama, who was also thrown from the truck, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators said the two were not wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the SUV, Evelina Williams, of Durham, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Vega-Lezama and Williams were treated at a local hospital and later released.

No charges have been filed, police said.
