Two Triangle Attorneys Hired To Defend Former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth has a new legal team defending him against first degree murder charges. Two high profile attorneys from the Triangle are now on the case.

Durham attorney Kenneth Spaulding and Chapel Hill attorney David Rudolf are representing Rae Carruth in his criminal case.

Spaulding says one of the most important things he can do for his client is get his side of the story out.

In court Wednesday, Spaulding said Carruth was not running away from his responsibilities with his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams.

In fact, he attended Lamaze classes with her, doctor appointments and even appeared at the hospital after the birth of their son, Chancellor.

"It clearly is an intriguing case," Spaulding said. "You have had someone who was shot and killed, and that's when you really want to make sure that the truth really comes out, because the results are so deadly."

Spaulding adds in spite of all the publicity, Carruth's legal team probably will not seek a change of venue.

"I have no questions in my mind that the citizens there (in Charlotte) will wait and hear both sides of the issue, and that there are very good people there."

"They will give anyone the opportunity to be heard and will be fair with them," Spaulding said.

Even with all the attention being paid to the case, the Durham defense attorney says it is hard to compare to a similar case he worked five years ago.

Spaulding presented the famous Mark Fuhrman tapes in the O.J. Simpson trial. The tapes revealed Fuhrman had made some racist comments in the past.

"Well, there will never be a case like the O.J. Simpson case," Spaulding said. "You learn from it in so many ways that I just don't know where you would ever get experience like that."

Spaulding says he will not discuss how Carruth is doing or his mental state since he believes that could damage his case.
