Cumberland County Gets A Head Start on Hurricane Preparation

Emergency management workers, along with city and county authorities, participated in a drill designed to better prepare everyone for the real thing.

Under the scenario, a Category 4 hurricane with 140-mile-an-hour winds, storms ashore barreling towards Cumberland County.

"We taxed our shelter system very heavily to see what types of communication we would have as they were filling up, so we would be able to start manning more shelters," says Cheryl Grabowski, the emergency management coordinator.

The people involved in the drill say you cannot underestimate how valuable the practice is.

"The more exercises we do then we can all get through the worst case scenario," says Ronda River with the Red Cross, "and if it's something small then we should be able to get through that no problem."

It is practice they hope they do not have to put to use.
