The Durham Police Department's "Partners Against Crime" group is using the Internet to get crime alerts out to neighbors. When a crime is committed, everyone on the mailing list receives an e-mail.
Officer Tony Scott says community policing is an integral part of keeping neighborhoods safe.
"They are aware of what's going on, and they are able to be on the lookout," he said. "When they see things that are suspicious, they keep us informed."
The P.A.C. group in District 2 is also using an auto-dialer telephone system to contact neighbors who are not online. Police can send out hundreds of phone messages to let residents know of any crimes taking place in their neighborhoods.
