Durham police are looking for four people who broke into a home Friday morning in broad daylight.
Posted — UpdatedDURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are looking for four people who broke into a home in broad daylight and assaulted a mother.
The mother, whose name was not released, and her 3-year-old daughter were inside their Independence Avenue home at about 10:30 a.m. Friday when someone knocked on the back door, police said.
Two men and two women then forced their way into the house and told the occupants they had a gun. Police said, however, no one ever saw a weapon.
The child told WRAL that "the bad people punched my mommy," and investigators confirmed the mother was struck in the eye and tied to a kitchen chair while the assailants ransacked the house.
Sources told WRAL the men used a cord from a phone they tore from the wall to tie the mother.
Police said the child was not injured.
Authorities said the four individuals took a television, two computers, jewelry and a PlayStation 2 from the house, as well as an in-dash television from a vehicle parked in the garage.
"They went through the house -- didn't destroy it -- but t hey went to a certain room -- the master bedroom and demolished the closet looking for money," officer Jeffrey Cockerham said.
They fled the scene in a small, gray, four-door hatchback with a loud muffler, police said. The make and model were not immediately known.
Police released the following descriptions of the perpetrators:
- A black man, 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build. He had short cornrows and was wearing a white T-shirt and black pants.
Anyone with information about the crime should call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
