The police chase started near Rolesville on Highway 401 and moved north to Louisburg, leaving 11 damaged vehicles behind.
The chase began when authorities clocked a pickup doing 85 miles per hour on Highway 401 in Rolesville. The chase crossed the Wake-Franklin County line at a speed of more than 100 miles per hour. The pursuit ended when the fleeing pickup truck hitstop sticksin Louisburg, and the tires deflated. The driver lost control and landed in a ditch.
"He lost control, went off the right shoulder, into the ditch and flipped over on his side," officer Scott Wiggins says.
Wiggins dove in the ditch and pulled out 34-year-old Shelvie Hinzman Jr., of Zebulon.
"When he was getting out, alcohol bottles were falling out of the vehicle too," Wiggins says. Hinzman refused to take a Breathalyzer test.
The chase involved speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Authorities say the truck went through a school zone at about 80 miles per hour, at one point in the chase.
Rolesville Police Chief Jimmy Green was in pursuit, but could do nothing to protect the vehicles in the suspect's path.
"He actually rammed four to push them out of the way," Green says. "If the people who were headed southbound hadn't moved, it would have been a head-on collision, because he was not going to move."
One person reported minor injuries.
