UNC Professor Killed While Crossing Chapel Hill Street

At about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, M. David Galinsky, 71, was struck and killed while crossing Fordham Boulevard near Manning Drive. An avid Tar Heel fan, according to those who knew him, Galinsky was going to the North Carolina-Boston College men's basketball game at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Galinsky's death has shaken the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, where he was a professor emeritus for more than 32 years in the clinical psychology program. In 1997, he retired, but was rehired the next day as a part-time professor.

"He spent his day here in this department with the graduate students, supervising them, laughing with them, instructing them," said Dr. Don Baucom.

Baucom said Galinsky will be sorely missed.

"The stories about him are colorful, lively, crazy -- (he was the) kind of character, in many ways, that you hope many universities are filled with -- and totally committed," Baucom said. "And suddenly, he's gone."

The accident is under investigation, and police have not determined whether charges would be filed against the driver, Eugene Arnold Bober, of Chapel Hill.

Galinsky's death was the fourth incident in three days involving a vehicle and a pedestrian or bicyclist.

On Tuesday evening, a 39-year-old Carrboro man, Harry Alston, was riding his bike when police said a charter bus carrying Boston College men's basketball team hit and killed him. The accident is still under investigation.

On Monday, a pedestrian was killed on Highway 15-501 at Bennett Road and another was struck and seriously injured on West Franklin Street.
