Man Shoots Self During Cary Standoff

in the Canterbury subdivision in Cary is now a crime scene.

It was the home of 46-year-old Errol Russeau. Cary police said a fraud investigation led them there on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, officers mobilized outside Russeau's home. Shortly beforehand, investigators tried to serve him with an arrest warrant for fraud.

"We've been working on that investigation for a few weeks, and it came to the conclusion of drawing a warrant," said Cary police spokesman Dave Wullf.

When Russeau refused to come to the door, Cary authorities put the immediate area on lockdown, ordering neighbors in five nearby homes to get out of the area. Also as a precaution, students who lived near the scene were not allowed to go home.

Neighbors could only watch as Cary police surrounded Russeau's house. About 45 minutes after police arrived, they heard what sounded like a gunshot. When they couldn't reach Russeau, the SWAT team stormed the house a couple of hours later. That's when they found Russeau inside, dead from a gunshot wound.

The crime scene rustled the usual peace in the Cary neighborhood.

"I walk down this street all the time, me and my girlfriend," said Canterbury resident Jesse Benoit. "It's a little scary."

Investigators said that despite Russeau's death, they plan to complete their fraud investigation. Russeau's body is now at the state medical examiners office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
