DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police made an arrest Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl.

Holly Lyons, 17, of Hoover Road, was arrested and charged with the March 25 death of Tavisa Cartnail. Police said a bullet hit Cartnail while she was in the back seat of an SUV traveling along Driver Street near Taylor Street. She was pronounced dead at her Fidelity Street home nearby after the driver rushed her there.

A bullet also grazed the head of Cartnail's 16-year-old sister, who was sitting in the front seat. Investigators said Lyons was out on bond at the time of the fatal shooting.

Durham police and members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force arrested Lyons at around 2 a.m. Tuesday inside an apartment on Keystone Place. Authorities said they do not believe Lyons and Cartnail knew each other.

Lyons has also been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in the shooting of Cartnail's sister.

Lyons is on one-year probation for possession of stolen goods. He was arrested April 10 and charged with possession of a firearm by a minor. He was also arrested March 31 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and discharging a firearm within city limits in connection with an incident on Glenbrook Drive.

Police said Lyons may have shot himself in the leg in the Glenbrook Drive incident after firing shots at another person who was not injured.

Lyons was being held in the Durham County Jail without bond.

The evening that Cartnail and her sister were shot, police had received a call about a man shooting wildly in the Driver-Taylor intersection. Cars that arrived there within a minute after getting the call could not find anyone, however.
