Habitat for Humanity Seeking More Funds, Volunteers to Build More Homes

Hurricane Floyd's flooding destroyed several homes built by Habitat for Humanity. But volunteers are ready to rebuild.

Theresa Hart stands in what's left of her master bedroom. Hart and her kids moved into this Habitat For Humanity house in February.

Floyd forced the Harts and five other Habitat families out of their homes in September. Hart is grateful they survived the flood. But she is also anxious to put her life back together.

"All of this is material, but it's home, and we've got no place to go," Hart says.

Habitat for Humanity has built 17 homes in Rocky Mount since 1991. Next year alone, they want to build 24, a number even they describe as nearly impossible.

"We have most of the land, but we need to raise $800,000 to $1 million to do that," says Rev. Peter Gilliland of Habitat for Humanity.

And they need to raise it quickly. Habitat's building season starts in March.

The agency has enough money and volunteers to repair homes like Hart's. But unless donations start coming in soon, their ambitious building program may never get off the ground.
