1 Teen Dead, 2 Teens Charged After Durham Drive-by Shooting

Police say the young men got angry and chose to solve a dispute with violence. The argument left one teenager dead, and two others in a Durham jail.

Dominick Prince, 15, was sitting on a couch inside a house on South Roxboro Street when he was killed by a stray bullet Monday. He was a freshman at Orange High School in Hillsborough.

Israel Beairs, 16, and Convellus Parker, 17, are charged with his murder.

Sylvia Weeks lives next door to the house where Prince was killed. She is shocked by the age of the victim and the suspects.

"To have such anger and temper to want to kill somebody is really bad," she says.

One of the suspects is a student at Hillside High School in Durham. His classmates say they are not surprised to hear about teenagers resolving an argument with weapons instead of words.

"It's pretty common," says student Woody Lipkins. "You hear around school about who got hit and I think it's kind of sad, personally."

Students say it is not unusual for teens to own handguns, although they do not always intend to use them.

"Protection. Because people are crazy. We need to protect ourselves," says student Rhachel Royal.

Police are still investigating, and trying to understand how an argument between the teenagers escalated into a murder.

"We depend on people like the Dragon Unit or the Stars Program and other intervention-type units to teach young people that this is not the way to settle differences," says Lt. Ed Sarvis of the Durham Police Department.

Police say more arrests are possible. They say they do not know of the victim was the intended target of the drive-by shooting.

They also want to know if the victim and suspects were gang members, although they say the shooting was not about a gang-related dispute.

The suspects, who are being held without bond, have a bond hearing Wednesday morning.
