Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — Michael Jordan appeared in Chapel Hill Thursday to officially dedicate his new restaurant, 23, on Franklin Street.

Dozens of people started lining up at noon in hopes of seeing Jordan at the restaurant.

"I'm here to see the greatest basketball player to ever play in the NBA," says fan Brian Gordan. "Jordan is an icon and this is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Jordan officially changed the name of the restaurant to Michael Jordan's 23.

Jordan arrived at the restaurant at 6 p.m. to sign the banner in front of the restaurant. He then attended a private party.

Fans tried to peek through the windows of the restaurant to catch a glimpse of His Airness.

"I got the chance to see him close enough," says fan Tonie Watt. "I took some pictures and that was good enough."

Guests for the private party included current UNC coach Bill Guthridge, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and former UNC coach Dean Smith.
