RALEIGH — Parking in downtown Raleigh may be getting tougher. The Raleigh City Council voted Tuesday to start negotiations with Lockheed-McLaurin, a private parking company.
The private company would be in charge of enforcing parking violations and collecting payments.
Supporters say it would yield more return for the city and help monitor parking better, but those against it say it will chase away paying customers.
"Nazi parking people has been used to describe our concern for what could happen and what has happened in a lot of the privatized parking that's already been developed on Hillsborough Street," says Denis Wood of Hillsborough Partnership.
Once Raleigh's City Manager agrees to a deal, it would still need to get the council's approval.
