RALEIGH — Millions of procrastinators are facing the midnight deadline for filing income tax returns. Taxpayers got two extra days this year since the usual April 15 deadline fell on a Saturday.
Most post offices do not plan to extend hours Monday, however Fayetteville residents are in luck. The post office on Green Street will be open until midnight.
Taxpayers may request an extension to file their taxes, but it must be sent in by the midnight deadline. The extension only gives more time to file a return. It does not give extra time to pay any taxes owed.
Penalties can add up for those who fail to pay what they owe by midnight Monday:A 25 percent late filing fee will be charged to those missing the deadline. For example, if you owe $500, the fee would be $125. After 30 days, additional penalties and interest start accruing. To collect, the IRS can attach liens or levies on a taxpayer's house, car, wages or bank account.
TheInternal Revenue Servicesays of the 77 million returns filed so far, almost 62 million will be getting refunds.
