DURHAM — An adventurous pilot made a pit stop in Durham on his way to the North Pole.
Gus McLeod wants to be the first person to fly an open cockpit plane to the North Pole. He was in Durham Saturday while he was having his 1939 Boeing Steerman modified for the trip.
McLeod says it is worth braving temperatures of seventy degrees below zero to set a new record.
"There's not a lot of aviation records left," McLeod says. "I've been flying for thirty years and always wanted to do an aviation record. Here's one we can do."
It will take McLeod about a month to get to the North Pole and back. A crew fromNational Geographicwill film the journey. -->
