The dragon is supposed to bring long life and prosperity to the Chinese people. In ancient times, emperors regarded themselves as reincarnations of dragons, and children born during the year are considered blessed.
Dragons are born leaders and many Chinese parents hope to have a Dragon child. To be a dragon, a person must have been born in 1916, '28, '40, '52, '64, '76 or 1988.
Famous American Dragons include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Shirley Temple and Christopher Reeve.
One local museum is joining the celebration.Explorisis preparing to ring in the Chinese New Year Saturday;its celebration will last until February 20.
Kids can help create a dragon, make a Chinese lantern and write "Happy New Year" in Chinese characters.
Raleigh's newest family attraction encourages people from all ages to respect differences, appreciate similarities and make connections with people all around the world.
Located on East Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh, Exploris costs adults $7.00 to get in and $5.00 for kids. The Chinese New Year Celebration is free with admission.
The museum is closed on Mondays in February.
