Rmay Msalmch was preparing to close the Peace Mini Mart on Hines Street when a gunman took him to the back of the store and shot him twice in the head.
The clerk is in serious condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Police are looking for anyone who might have seen or heard anything.
"We've had some robberies in the past couple of weeks of these smaller stores, but the description does not match the other suspects," said Captain Carlton Turnage of the Wilson Police Department.
The incident puts Sam and David Nassar on edge. The two operate a convenience store just a few blocks away. They say the robbery forces them to keep an eye on every new customer.
"We know most of the customers that are here," Sam said. "The people that are new, we've got to pay attention to them."
The attack also has the attention of residents who live nearby. Katrina Lucas says she would have been there Wednesday night if she was not home helping a friend.
"It wasn't nothing but the grace of the Lord to keep both of us from going to the store because any other night, I'm down there all the time right before he closes, sitting down there talking to him and everything," Lucas said.

Wilson Police hope someone may have noticed the suspect because he is a large man. Police describe the suspect as six feet, three inches tall with a stocky build. He was last seen running west on Daniel Street wearing a gray sweater, blue jeans and a white cap.
